One guitar ten fingers
To the rhythm of the finger snaps of swing and blues aficionados, Sophie Le Roux triggers her camera to share her love of music and musicians. She captures these artists through their hands, with the sensual gaze she casts upon this essential limb, an extension of their instruments. This third photographic work dedicated to musicians' hands focuses entirely on guitarists—featuring all kinds of guitars, including bass guitars and even an oud!
Through this anthology of the greatest guitarists of jazz, blues, rock, and world music, we feel a deep sense of remembrance for those who have recently passed away: Sylvain Luc, Christian Escoudé, John Mayall, and Russell Malone, admiring their hands—so full of life—immortalized by Sophie Le Roux. Others featured in the book left us some time ago: Bashung, Buddy Guy, Chuck Berry, Lucky Peterson, Luther Allison, Eddy Clearwater, and Patrick Verbeke.
Among the living, the greatest representatives of Anglo-Saxon jazz guitar are present: from George Benson to Pat Metheny, by way of John McLaughlin, John Scofield, and Mike Stern. Not forgetting the French: Manu Codjia, Jean-Marie Ecay, and Louis Winsberg.
Also worth mentioning is the bluesy feel of the hands of Buddy Guy, Eric Bibb, Cedric Burnside, and Bernard Allison, the latter having the privilege of gracing the cover, playing a Prince guitar! The hands of American rock guitarists sharpen their life-saving riffs with Elliott Murphy and Derek Trucks, as well as the scorching fervor of funk with Nile Rodgers. Women are also well represented, showcasing world music with Native American Pura Fé and Malian Fatoumata Diawara. Finally, the electric bass guitar is represented through the hands of Etienne Mbappé, Kyle Eastwood, and Larry Graham. Ten fingers on a six-string, immortalized by Sophie Le Roux like sensual and loving photographic caresses, provide the viewer with a unique, immediate, and intense visual pleasure. Which leads us to venture this playful pun: "Sophie Le Roux gets her kicks photographing hands," and this delight is contagious, evident in our wide-open eyes, captivated by the keen eye of our favorite photographer.
